What this site is, and isn't
Plain language, because that's the whole point of the site.
We are not lawyers, accountants, or tax professionals
Everything on DCTaxWatch.org is general information written by residents for residents. It is not legal, tax, or financial advice, and reading it does not create any attorney-client or professional relationship. If your situation is specific, complicated, or expensive, talk to a Nebraska attorney or a tax professional.
We are not the government
DCTaxWatch.org is independent and citizen-run. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for Douglas County, the City of Omaha, any school district, the State of Nebraska, or any elected official. The "Notice of Proposed Tax Increase" postcard comes from the county, not from us. Official questions go to the offices listed on your notice.
The statute wins
We summarize Nebraska law in everyday words. Summaries lose detail. Where our wording and the official statute differ, the statute controls. Every summary links to the official text at the Nebraska Legislature; read it before you rely on it.
Accuracy and timing
We work hard to keep dates, hearing details, contact information, and dollar figures correct, and we cite sources. Things change: officials leave office, hearings get rescheduled, the Legislature rewrites the process (it did in 2026, effective 2027). We make no guarantee that anything here is current or complete. Confirm deadlines with the official source before acting, especially the June valuation protest window.
The letter tool
The "Take action" page drafts a message you can edit and send from your own email program, under your own name. We don't send it, store it, or see it. What you say to your elected officials is your responsibility. Contact details for officials come from public listings and may be out of date.
No position on your taxes
We explain how the process works and how to participate. We don't tell you whether to support or oppose any particular budget or tax request, and we don't endorse candidates or ballot measures.
Outside links
We link to government sites, news outlets, and reference sites we don't control. We aren't responsible for their content or availability.
